Swirlydoos Designer Challenge Week 3

Things are moving fast over at Swirlydoos.com for their Ultimate Design challenge. We are nearing the end of week 3 which means we are halfway through already! 

This week Miranda decided to challenge us with using foil tape. Um HELL-UR? Did anyone see my submission for week 1? PPPFFFSSSTTT...I got this;)

The panel I designed was so large and I really liked all the surface area so instead of cutting it down to a tag I decided to cover a dollar store notebook with it. P.S. I LOVE Alice in Wonderland.  And if you are wondering where I got those fab tags my stamping is on...they are Prima packaging. Yes...packaging. 

 Here is a close up of the background made with the foil tape. I used various colors of alcohol ink and then topped them with the pearl mixative. I sanded to allow the metal to show through on the raised areas and then edged the whole thing with black Staz-On. 

I really loved the idea of contrasting the harsh metal with the soft layers of lace and trim. So pretty.  

The flower showing the hint of pink was made using the Spellbinders rose creations. I used a tutorial from over at swirlydoos.com...coventry rose. Check it out...Pascale is fantastic with handmade flowers. The pen nib says "journal" and the sentiment reads "Why sometimes I've believed as many as 6 impossible things before breakfast".

I really had a lot of fun making this. I can't wait for the next challenge on Monday.

Ultimate Design week 2

Here is my submission for week 2. Layers upon layers upon layers was the name of the game. I used the January kit from Swirlydoos simply because it was too gorgeous to pass up.

Ultimate design challenge week 1

So the challenge for week 1 was to make a 3D embellishment using 2 techniques involving mediums and use that on a project. Of course I went total Andiepants style with another steam-chic project!!

Last year at a boyscout training session, I won a wooden boat to take back and promote the camp to my pack. My boys decided a few days ago they no longer wanted said boat and I decided to keep the wood. 

When this project was introduced I had dreams of gluing the wood down and decorating but that's about as far as I went. Everything just kinda fell into place! I was walking through Joann's (working on another project, and saw the canvas was 50% off! I decided that's what I needed to support the weight of the wood I wanted to use.

After layers and layers of multimedium, gesso, paint, stamping...it all came together. I used the feathers as wings on the dress form...so it's like a fairy. I love the contrast of all the white and romantic against the grungy metal and crackle on the base of the dress form.

Off the page

When  I took the class from Finn in June it was my first attempt at collage. I was not happy with my results but it was a first attempt. Once I was home I decided to give it another go, but this time on a canvas. Of course I scrapped my fave subject...my hubby.

 The barbed wire and bar code is Dusty Attic. The gears, bird and keys are from my Tim Holtz dies. There are random buttons and paraphernalia all over the place. I had a blast making this. All of the papers underneath are by Prima and the paint is Claudine Helmuth. The stamps are My Mind's Eye, and tattered Angels. There is tissue tap underneath the barbed wire chippy pieces and the journaling surrounds my hubby's outline. 

The metal piece is a piece of scrap my hubby brought home for me. He frequently supports my habit/addiction and I love it!!!

The acrylic label that says Battle the burn...yeah that was hanging from a bottle of hair product that I bought. I just love using all those little odds n ends. Everything has been sprayed with smooch in black, rubbed with gold rub n buff, and detailed in teal paint by Golden which has been discontinued. I really can't think of the name right now.

 I adore the way this TH bird turned out. I really loved making all the texture with my texture paste too. This whole thing was just yummy.

Someone recently posted that you need to step back and look at your work to get an idea. I really wish I had that advice before. The red piece of paper (under the paint) in the middle of the page detracts from the piece as a whole. I have learned, which is the most important part of creating art...growing and learning. I hope you also can take that advice for the golden nugget that it is. Thanks for looking.

Swirlydoos November RR entry

This month I was privileged to be number 1 on my Round Robin team over at Swirlydoos.com. This means I had to design a page and the rest of my team has to scraplift my page...no pressure. This month we had a couple of rules. #1, more than one picture on your layout. #2 specialty paper with an extra bonus point if you use that specialty paper to make a flower. #3, rub ons.  Here is my entry for the November RR...

This is a page of my DD and her BFF. They have known each other since preschool and even though they attend different schools now, we still make sure they get together a couple times each year. When they do get together, it's like nothing has changed and they were never apart. I think these two will be friends for life. I decided to try a monochromatic LO for this month.

 Here is a closeup of the bottom right. The flowers are by Petaloo. I took a doily and cut and folded it to make a flower that is peeking out on the left side of the picture. I used distress stain in spun sugar to color the doily edges. There is a piece of mulberry paper peeking out on the right just below that doily. There is also some Melissa Frances tissue garland under the bottom picture and under the top picture (you can see better in the picture below)

The brick wall is made with clear embossing paste mixed with Luminarte primary elements in icicles. It really turned out cool. I have been using my new Luminarte products on EVERYTHING!!

 Wood letters are by Kaisercraft. I primed them with gesso and used Luminarte's primary elements in chiffon pink. You have to mix the primary elements with gum arabic in order to get it to stick. I used the left over paint to color the mini lily that I made from my punch.

This final picture shows the Kaisercraft rub on that I used. the pink in between the torn paper is a Tattered Angels stamp using Luminarte Silks in pink grapefruit. I wasn't kidding when I said I'm using it on everything.

Swirlydoos "Rocktober" Round Robin winner!!

I am so flattered I don't even know what to say! One of my fave challenges over there is the round robin challenge. Once you sign up you are assigned to a team of 4. Person 1 has to design a page within a specified set of guidelines and submit their entry by the first Monday of the month. The second person on each team has to scrap lift person 1 and submit by the second Monday. Well, you get the idea. At the end of the month we all vote for our top 3.

 This month there were some super gorgeous entries! I am so flattered to say that my LO for the month received the most votes/points! Of course there was a 3 way tie at first. The amount of talent is unbelievable and I can't believe that I was even in the top 3.

This is one of my pics from the hubby and I in Vegas last month. This Lo was made using the current Swirlydoos kit...Belle Chanson.
